It was the first car that Mercedes-Benz brought to the Indian market when it came here in 1993 and now 20 years later there will be a new one launched for our market. The W205-spec model was unveiled earlier this year and has already gone on sale in most European markets but will no longer be the baby Benz sedan as that slot has been taken by the CLA.
Exterior
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been designed to look exactly like the much larger 2014 S-Class. This means that it gets a similar fascia with the teardrop-shaped headlights, slatted chrome grille (depending on the trim line) as well as the sporty bumper with a larger air recess in place of the fog lamps.
The side profile gets a strong shoulder line that slopes downwards from the front to the rear. It divides the profile into three sections- window and door handles, door profile and skirt line running in line with the wheels. Mercedes-Benz is expected to offer at least four to five alloy wheel options including the 10-spoke AMG wheels when the car is launched for the Indian market.
The rear profile is exactly the same as the S-Class which means that it gets wrap-around tail lamps, dual tail lamps that have been integrated into the body work as well as the chrome line running above the number plate holder.
Interior
The interiors of the 2014 C-Class bear some of the hallmarks of the new design language but overall, it retains a familiar and quite successful design philosophy. The steering is a three piece affair with controls mounted on it for various options.
The gauges are partially digital and there is a new large central display that is expected to show most of the options for the car. The familiar rotary dial control system has been retained from the previous model and is expected to be a standard option across all variants. Considering the C-Class’ buyer base, the trim levels will all include leather for the seats, dashboard, steering wheel and the gear knob. We also expect that Merc will offer a rear seat entertainment package for the Indian customers.
Engine, variants and gearbox
The engine options will include the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel which will be offered in the C200 CGI for the former and the C220 CDI and C250 CDI in the case of the latter. We also expect the new C63AMG to be brought to the Indian market once the car is launched in the Indian market. The entire car range will be offered with the 7G-tronic automatic gearbox as standard across all variants.
Price and competition
The C-Class is no longer the baby Benz , so its price is expected to move into the Rs 40 lakh and above range but it will still compete with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Jaguar XF and the Volvo S60 range. We expect that Mercedes-Benz will launch the car in early 2015 for the Indian market
