Mercedes- The Pope has got a new car and, choosing not to break from tradition, he's opted for a Mercedes-Benz once again. Having received his new car from Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, we check out some of the key features of the Pope's latest ride.
The latest popemobile is based on the M-Class that you can order at your local Mercedes-Benz dealer, but as you'd expect, it comes with one or two notable extras. The majority of which you won't find on the options list at the back of the brochure
the dome has been extended significantly, giving the Pope more space and easier access. As before, the dome is bullet-proof, meaning the Pope can travel around in safety
Larger glass panels in the viewing area provide the Pope's public with a better view. Mercedes-Benz, possibly influenced by the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Vauxhall Adam, has also adding an illuminated roof lining
The throne is a central design feature in the new Popemobile and comes with an embroidered coat of arms of the Holy Father.
When not in the Vatican, the Popemobile is transported around the world by air. So to make packing easier, Mercedes has reduced the ride height of the vehicle by a few centimetres, whilst improving the internal standing height
The new Popemobile was designed and built entirely by Mercedes-Benz and took nine month
The new Popemobile was handed over to the Pope by Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars on the 7th December. It made its debut in Rome of the Catholic Feast Day, 8th December
