Top 10 fuel efficient diesel cars in India



A few days earlier, we revealed the top 10 fuel efficient petrol cars in India by taking into account the real-world mileage of each car achieved by our testers.
We have now compiled a list of the top 10 fuel efficient diesel cars in India. This list mentions the fuel efficiency numbers claimed by manufacturers (as per ARAI) along with the actual mileage achieved by our testers while driving in the city and on the highway.
The calculations have been done based on the assumption that the owner drives the vehicle for 1,000km a month, which includes 50 percent city roads and 50 percent highways, and that the cost per litre of diesel is Rs 65 (Mumbai, Maharashtra price).
Honda Amaze

The Amaze was Honda’s first car in India to be powered by a diesel engine. The made-for-India diesel motor, with an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 25.8kpl, gave Honda the bragging rights to India’s most fuel efficient diesel car. During testing, the diesel Amaze delivered an efficiency of 15.2kpl in the city and 20.8kpl on the highway. The Amaze comes with a 1498cc, four-cylinder engine which makes 98bhp and 20.3kgm of torque. The Amaze diesel retails from Rs 5.97 lakh to Rs 7.54 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

Chevrolet Beat

The diesel motor under the hood of the Chevrolet Beat has an ARAI approved fuel efficiency of 25.44kpl. During our road test, it delivered an efficiency of 16kpl in the city and 19.1kpl on the highway. The Chevrolet Beat diesel is powered by a 936cc, three-cylinder engine that develops 58.5bhp and 15.2kgm of torque. The Beat diesel is priced from Rs 4.77 lakh to Rs 5.99 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).








Tata Indica

Since its launch, the Tata Indica endeared itself to owners and fleet operators with its stellar fuel efficiency. While the Indica has an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 25kpl, we achieved 15.3kpl while driving in the city and 19.3kpl on the highway. The Tata Indica has a 1396cc engine which develops 69bhp and 14.2kgm of torque. The Tata Indica diesel variants are priced from Rs 4.39 lakh to Rs 4.80 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

Maruti Swift Dzire

The ARAI fuel efficiency rating for the Swift Dzire is 23.4kpl. While driving in the city, our testers extracted an efficiency of 14.6kpl. On the highway, it returned an efficiency of 17kpl. The Swift Dzire has a 1248cc, four-cylinder engine which produces 74bhp and 19.3kgm of torque. The Swift Dzire diesel range retails from Rs 5.78 lakh to Rs 7.32 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

Nissan Micra

The Micra has an ARAI approved fuel efficiency of 23.08kpl.  When tested by us, it returned 14.6kpl when driven in the city and 19.5kpl on the highway. The Nissan Micra has a 1461cc, four-cylinder diesel motor which develops 63bhp and 16.3kgm of torque. The Micra diesel variants are priced from Rs 5.78 lakh to Rs 7.03 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

Maruti Swift

The diesel Maruti Swift has achieved immense popularity among buyers owing to its fuel efficient and reliable engine. The Swift diesel claims an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 22.9kpl.  During our fuel efficiency runs, we achieved 14.6kpl in the city and 19.5kpl on the highway. The Maruti Swift has a Fiat-sourced 1248cc, four-cylinder engine which makes 74bhp and 19.3kgm of torque. Maruti Ritz

The Maruti Ritz claims an overall fuel efficiency of 23.2kpl. During a road test, the Ritz gave an efficiency of 14.6kpl in the city and 19.3kpl on the highway. Like the Swift Dzire, the Maruti Ritz too gets the same Fiat-sourced 1248cc, four-cylinder diesel engine which develops an identical 74bhp and 19.3kgm of torque. The Ritz diesel variants are priced from Rs 5.27 lakh to Rs 6.15 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

Toyota Etios Liva

The Etios Liva marked Toyota’s foray into the high volumes hatchback segment in India. While Toyota claims a fuel efficiency of 23.5kpl, we managed to extract 14.5kpl in the city and 19.3kpl on the highway. Like its sedan sibling, the Etios Liva too gets the same 1364cc mill under the hood which pushes out an identical 68bhp and 17.3kgm of torque. The Etios Liva diesel range is priced from Rs 5.75 lakh to Rs 6.91 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

Honda City

The all-new fourth-generation Honda City was the first model of the car to get a diesel engine here. The carmaker claims the City diesel delivers an efficiency of 25.1kpl (as per ARAI). While driving in the city, we got 14.2kpl and on the highway, it returned an efficiency of 19.5kpl. It too gets the same 1498cc, four-cylinder motor as the Amaze that makes an identical 98bhp and 20.3kgm of torque. The City diesel variants retail from Rs 8.37 lakh to Rs 11.05 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

Toyota Etios

Toyota says the Etios can deliver a fuel efficiency of 23.5kpl (as per ARAI standards). When we tested it for efficiency in the city, it returned 14.2kpl and on the highway, it delivered 19kpl. The Etios is powered by a 1364cc, four-cylinder engine which generates 68bhp and 17.3kgm of torque. The Etios diesel variants are priced from Rs 6.64 lakh to Rs 8.08 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).
